Class of 1980

3rd Floor Kent

December 1976, 3rd floor Kent dorm (south end). Our hallway was an extension of our dorm rooms. The payphone mounted next to the bathroom entrance was mostly used for incoming calls. We could place long distance outgoing calls on the RA’s telephone whenever she put it in the hallway outside her door (we paid for our calls when the monthly bill arrived). The popcorn maker was often in use outside the RA’s room (where it was plugged in), especially during midterms and finals week. This photo shows us gathering together at the end of our 1st college semester.

Dorm Room Camaraderie

Fall 1976. Gatherings were common in my dorm room. On this particular evening, everyone huddled in close as one of my hallmates read aloud from the Playgirl magazine that my roommate had just received from us for her 18th birthday.

The UVA Legacy

43 years apart my son walks the lawn graduating from McIntire as I did in 1980 from the College. Ninth in the family at UVA.

What does the BAW community mean to you?
Community is where I found life-long friends who support me no matter what. UVA is where I grew up really – coming there at 17 years old and adulting through age 21. As friends, we did many firsts together – as Wahoos. Friendships established later in life are not as deep and fulfilling as those established at Virginia. That’s a forever community. Wahoowa!

Ballroom in Newcomb Hall 1979

The Muntu Dancers and I did the show The Wiz. I was the lion. We got a standing ovation for our show.

What does the BAW community mean to you?
BAW community means to me a fun and memorable event to reconnect with friends and classmates that attended UVA.
