UVA Strong: community-inspired fund launches
November 17, 2022

Dear UVA alumni,

The strength of our community continues to humble us. In response to the note and images we shared earlier this week, many of you asked how you could help.

Your outpouring of support has inspired the creation of the UVA Strong Fund. The goal of this University-wide effort, administered by the UVA Alumni Association, is threefold: to support victims, survivors, and their families; to provide services for students in the wake of the tragedy; and to honor the lives of those who died on November 13.

We recognize there are many ways to show your care, and we are grateful for each one. Thank you for continuing to uplift us and propel our community forward.

Together, we are UVA Strong.

The University will be hosting a Memorial Service on Saturday, November 19 at 3:30pm at John Paul Jones Arena to honor the victims and support the survivors of the tragic shooting. The ceremony is open to all and will also be livestreamed at virginia.edu.

A note from your Alumni Association
November 15, 2022

Dear UVA alumni,

It is still difficult to express our profound sense of loss in the wake of the tragic shooting on Grounds. We, along with the rest of the University community, are mourning the deaths of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry and praying for the recovery of two other students. Our hearts go out to the victims’ loved ones and members of the close-knit UVA Football family as they navigate this devastating reality.

While the grief on Grounds has been overwhelming, so too have been the expressions of communal support. Flower bouquets line the walls of Beta Bridge and Scott Stadium. Bedsheet banners with the players’ numbers – 1, 15, and 41 – blanket front porches down Rugby Road and Madison Lane. And in perhaps the most moving gesture of all, thousands converged on the South Lawn last night in a silent vigil organized by students.

Since many of you cannot be with us in Charlottesville, we hope that these images provide you with some solace during these heartbreaking times. They are a powerful reminder of the resilience, compassion, and care that define our Wahoo community.

May we continue to lean on each other as we navigate the long road ahead.
