What is offered in the School of Nursing?

Nurses, often in collaboration with other health care professionals, promote the optimal health care and comfort of individuals and groups through the systematic application of knowledge from nursing and related disciplines. Implicit in the practice of professional nursing is accountability for professional growth and practice, demonstration of leadership, and commitment to the development and application of nursing theory and research. Students at UVA start in the classroom but transition to hands on experience in not only a hospital setting, but also in the community at large.

How is advising handled?

Students are assigned a faculty advisor upon entry to the University.

What do UVA faculty have to say about the School of Nursing?

“The contributions made by nurses and nursing students at UVA are immeasurable, and are an important part of the long tradition of service, education, and research at this institution. As just one example, University of Virginia Nursing graduates joined physicians to staff military hospital units in both World War I and World War II. Back home in Charlottesville, nursing students literally ran the hospital, ensuring seamless continuity of care for patients and their families. Those young women, accepting weighty responsibilities beyond their years, worked long hours with little complaint to ensure hospital services were available.” –John Casteen III, President Emeritus
