What programs and concentrations are offered in the School of Engineering?

The first year of study at the School of Engineering and Applied Science is spent gaining a solid background in the sciences and mathematics. Students take courses in natural and applied science as well as other electives. Toward the end of the first year, students apply for admission to a major in one of ten programs in engineering or applied science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Engineering and Society
  • Engineering Science
  • Engineering Systems & Environment
  • Materials Science & Engineering
  • Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

At the end of their four years at UVA, students produce a capstone project, or thesis, that encapsulates everything they learned in their undergraduate courses.

How is advising handled?

Students are assigned a faculty advisor upon entry to the University. After a student declares their major, they are assigned an advisor within their major.

What do UVA faculty have to say about the School of Engineering?

What do students have to say about the School of Engineering?

“One particular lesson I learned at UVA was the power of learning by doing. I learned the most from my group projects and extracurricular activities applying practical knowledge — those skills have proven to be most valuable in my work, and continue to drive my hobbies and projects outside of work” Jaz Harnal (Engr ’17)

How do I know if the School of Engineering is right for me?

Students who pursue engineering are passionate about math, science and engineering, and may enjoy solving problems and thinking creatively of new ways to do things.
