Students have the option to move off Grounds after their first year. Those choosing to remain on Grounds, or transfer students new to the University, have several options when it comes to on Grounds options, listed below. Every student living on Grounds has a Resident Advisor (RA) who lives within the residential community. All housing groups have laundry and mail facilities associated with them. Here’s an overview of the types of housing offered to upperclass students at UVA:
Apartment Style:
- Johnson
- Malone
- Weedon
Language Houses:
- Maison Françoise (French)
- Casa Bolívar (Spanish)
- Shea House (ASL, Arabic, Chines, German, Japanese, Korean, Persian, and Russian)
If none of these options appeal to you — or you want to live with friends off Grounds — there are a ton of houses and apartment complexes in Charlottesville that are not associated with the University but are still less than a five-minute walk away!
Some houses are associated with clubs and CIOs (contracted independent organizations), which is a great way to learn from and bond with people you share an interest with. There’s a lot of options, but no matter where you live, you can make it into a perfect home during your time at UVA.
