The UVA Career Center

The UVA Career Center serves all degree-seeking students, regardless of major or year. The Career Center can help students choose a major, a mentor, a graduate school, an internship or a job. The Career Center also keeps track of UVA graduates after graduation, including fields alumni go into and starting salaries. Several times a semester, the center hosts career fairs and events, with some aimed at specific fields and others open to all areas. The center also has many online resources for all steps in finding a vocation. In addition to the Career Center, some schools at UVA have dedicated career services departments to help students.

Advising Opportunities

Students can meet with career services either by appointment in Bryant Hall or drop-in advising at one of several locations around Grounds.

Choosing a Major

The Career Center has several surveys students can take to determine their strengths and interests. Students can meet with counselors one on one to discuss potential majors and how they would impact later career opportunities. On the Career Center website, students can peruse all of the different majors UVA has to offer, see post-graduate options and professional associations unique to each major, and find tips for building their resumes in a particular field.

Landing an Internship

The Center curates lists of internships students may be interested in and provides students with tools to find internships more narrowly focused on their interests. Students can also choose to partake in the Internship Placement Program, in which students fill out a one-time form and are matched with an internship. The Career Center can also help students find funding and housing for internships.

Finding the Next Steps

Similar to the resources available to students searching for internships, the Career Center has a wealth of information on job hunting and graduate school. These resources are tailored to a student’s interests and range from online information about salary ranges to interview tips. The Career Center also has several landing pages based on fields and information on where else students can look for job help. The Center provides students with access to Handshake, a job board aimed at college students and recent graduates. Career Center counselors also work with students interested in medical, law, or grad school and help them think about the next necessary steps. Additionally, the Career Center has tips for how to effectively network and find a mentor.

The UVA Career Center is here to help you with every step in your career journey, so don’t be afraid to ask them for help!
