Financial Support at UVA

UVA is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need. Student Financial Services has tools to help students determine their need and ways to meet it. It also provides a glossary to help families understand terms and jargon associated with financial aid.

Financial Aid at UVA

Incoming first years need to apply for aid prior to March 1 of their senior year. Depending on what admission cycle a student applies in, Student Financial Services recommends students submit their financial aid application sooner. Students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile to receive aid and may also be required to submit tax forms and Social Security numbers.

There are many factors that affect what type and amount of aid is awarded, based both on an individual and the family. Students typically receive a mix of aid types depending on their fiscal situation. The majority of financial aid is renewable over a student’s time in college. Students can also appeal for reconsideration if their aid needs change later.

Types of aid awarded by UVA and/or the UVA Alumni Association include scholarships and grants, work study, loans and monthly payment plans.

For more information on financial aid offered through UVA, please visit UVA’s Student Financial Services page and Financial Aid page.

Scholarships at UVA

The Alumni Association administers more than 250 different scholarships to students, ranging from modest stipends to full tuition, room and board. These scholarships are affiliated with affinity organizations, schools and departments, and more. There are links to non-UVA specific scholarships as well.

ODOS and AccessUVA

UVA also offers aid and other financial assistance programs through the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS). ODOS provides comprehensive support services and programs in order to create equitable educational opportunities for all students who need them. This also includes AccessUVA, which is the umbrella term for the University of Virginia’s need-based financial aid program for undergraduates. Below are examples of some of the aid that ODOS offers to students, including those participating in AccessUVA:

  • E-newsletters with targeted information pertinent to AccessUVA students
  • Resource guides on how to successfully transition to life at UVA
  • Financial literacy programs on topics like budgeting, completing the FAFSA, and understanding financial aid awards
  • Collaboration with student organizations dedicated to socioeconomic diversity on Grounds
