It’s the dream of many students when they apply to college: being able to study abroad! UVA students have the opportunity to study abroad for credit, and approximately 40% of University students study abroad each year across over 450 programs. Through its Education Abroad division, UVA’s International Studies Office coordinates study abroad for the year, semester, summer or J-Term.
Programs are offered in China, Jordan, Peru, Italy, Spain, Russia, India, and the United Kingdom, and the International Studies Office has an extensive approved list of other countries that can be perused with the Education Abroad program search. These education abroad experiences can occur at any point during the calendar year.
Students work with the International Studies Office and their academic advisor to choose a program that will allow them to broaden their academic and personal horizons. While you should take opportunities to experience the culture while studying in a foreign country, it’s also important to keep academics in mind when discussing and choosing a potential study abroad experience.
Students can be eligible to study abroad as early as their first year at UVA, though first year study abroad is rare. The University is committed to making these opportunities available for students who would like to take advantage of them and as such there are various scholarships and aid students can apply for.
The International Studies Office provides students with a handbook containing general information and other resources to make studying abroad accessible. The ISO also has numerous workshops and tools to help students find the right program, and their staff will walk students through every part of the process. Below is a list of some of the resources offered for students seeking international opportunities:
- Education Abroad Workshop
- Major Advising Sheets
- Appointments with Education Abroad Advisors
- Frequently Asked Questions for students and for parents
If you’ve always wanted to visit a different country, there are resources at UVA that can help you make it happen — don’t be afraid to ask!
