Students hoping to transfer to UVA at the start of their third year have eight options when it comes to program application. In addition to the five schools students can apply to as incoming first years (College of Arts and Science, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, or Kinesiology), transfer students can choose to apply to the McIntire School of Commerce, the School of Education and Human Development, or the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. Here we break down how the transfer application process is different for students applying directly to the three upper divisional programs. Remember that prospective transfer students can use the College of Arts & Sciences’ Transfer Credit Equivalencies to identify comparable courses at their current institution.
McIntire School of Commerce
Students interested in transferring to McIntire are encouraged to complete two years of coursework, including the prerequisites, at their current school of enrollment. Because of McIntire’s curriculum, McIntire admits students for the fall semester only and cannot accommodate mid-year transfers. Students currently enrolled in Virginia Community College System (VCCS) schools who are interested in applying to McIntire should complete the recommended courses before enrolling at McIntire.
In addition to the prerequisites, McIntire faculty may give assignments that involve coding and will expect you to be proficient in several basic coding concepts. Standardized tests are not required for applicants; however, it is recommended that non-native English speakers take the TOEFL or IELTS to be competitive for admission.
For more information on applying to McIntire as a transfer student, please visit the McIntire School of Commerce website.
School of Education and Human Development
The School of Education and Human Development offers many degrees and programs. Within the School of Education, transfer students may apply directly into Kinesiology, Speech Communications Disorders, Teacher Education, or Youth and Social Innovation. For more information on applying as a transfer student, please visit the School of Education and Human Development website.
Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy
To be eligible for admission to Batten, students must have accumulated 60 college credits before starting the program. Every year, a limited number of incoming third-year students who apply to UVA through the general admissions process are directly admitted, and second-year transfers to the University apply to Batten via UVA’s regular application process.
Students can apply to the Batten minor in the spring, but scheduling can be extremely tight—especially if there are still requirements in the College of Arts & Sciences to fulfill. The minor is traditionally completed over two years, but can be expedited. Batten also offers an Accelerated Master of Public Policy degree, which requires students to have earned 90 undergraduate credits before enrolling. As a transfer student, you may be eligible for this program depending on what credits you have left to fulfill while at UVA. For more information on applying to the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy as a transfer student, please visit Batten’s website.
No matter which program a student applies for, all applications go through the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Please visit their website for details regarding how to apply, and for some additional resources for transfer students, take a look below:
