Larry Goedde is has taught at U.Va. since 1981 and served for 15 years as Chair of the McIntire Department of Art. He has lectured and written extensively on the topics of seascape, landscape and still life, with publications including his book Tempest and Shipwreck in Dutch and Flemish Art: Convention, Rhetoric and Interpretation and various exhibition catalogues and essays. He has led Cavalier Travels trips to Holland and Belgium, the Danube River,Tuscany, a Mediterranean cruise from Rome to Lisbon and a Rhine/Moselle Rivers cruise.

Florence / Siena
Arrive in Florence. Transfer to Siena (1.5 hour ride) and check into the Athena Hotel. The afternoon is at leisure and enjoy a welcome reception and dinner that evening.
Take a walking tour of Siena beginning at its heart, the Piazza del Campo. In the piazza, visit the historic Torre del Magnia and Palazzo Pubblico, an outstanding example of classic Gothic architecture. The interior of the palazzo houses an impressive collection of Renaissance frescoes. Continue this morning with a walking tour of Siena’s Contrade. Siena is divided into 17 neighborhoods or Contrade. Each is a separate entity within the city and has its own church and patron saint, administration, recreational activities and a museum containing works of art and the costumes for the processions. After lunch on your own, this afternoon visit Siena’sduomo, renowned for its striking dark green and white marble façade. Dinner tonight is at the hotel.
Hotel Athena (B, D)
Sant’ Antimo / Montalcino
Travel south of Siena to Sant’ Antimo, a grand Romanesque church set in the picturesque Tuscan countryside. While visiting the church, attend a concert by the monks performing Gregorian chants. Continue to the hilltop town of Montalcino, renowned for its Brunello wine. Tour the Fortezza, the 14th century fortress that dominates the town, before having free time to explore independently. In the evening enjoy a cooking demonstration and dinner at Arte e Cucina.
Arrive in the city known as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. In Florence, visit the world famous Duomo and baptistery, two of Italy’s most recognized architectural and artistic masterpieces. Continue to the Galleria dell’Accademia, home to Michelangelo’s David. After the conclusion of the tour, the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure in Florence. Dinner is at the hotel tonight.
Set out for Tuscany’s famed Chianti region with a scenic drive through the picturesque countryside on the way to Strada, a small charming village, where you will visit a pasta factory with a small museum. Well observe an olive oil presentation and a guided sensory evaluation of three olive oils. There will be a tasting of a recipe made with olive oil. The presentation discusses how olive oil is made and how to distinguish high quality oils from fraudulent and poorly made products. This includes discussion of labeling rules (extra virgin, virgin, DOP), how to cook with olive oil and its health benefits. Enjoy lunch at the Pruneti Family farmhouse, the maker of the fine olive oil. In the afternoon, enjoy a wine tasting of some of the noted Chianti region vineyards.
Famed for its numerous towers, San Gimignano is one of the most recognizable Tuscan towns. On a walking tour of the city, visit the Piazza della Cisterna, lined with towers from the 13th and 14th century, the Piazza del Duomo and the duomo with its inspired frescos and the Palazzo del Popolo and Museo Civico, the seat of city government since the 13th century.
Siena or Pisa / Lucca (optional tour)
Enjoy a full day at leisure in Siena or an optional day excursion to Pisa and Lucca (at an additional cost of $155 per person). Lucca escaped the devastation of war and thus retains the charm of a small ancient Italian city-state. It also boasts one of the most extraordinary Tuscan art heritages, and its duomo (Cathedral San Martino) is still an important symbol for the town. Stroll through the old university town of Pisa on the Arno River, once an important maritime republic during the Middle Ages. Visit the Camposanto, Baptistery and Cathedral and enjoy an exterior visit to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS: Cancellations for all or any part of the trip will not be effective until received in writing in the offices of Thomas P. Gohagan & Company. Should you have to cancel, the following terms will apply: reservation cancellations are subject to a $200 per person administrative fee from the time of booking through 120 days prior to departure; $600 per person administrative fee 95-119 days prior to departure; 50% of the published regular fare 45-94 days before departure; 75% of the published full regular fare from 22 through 44 days prior to departure; cancellations 21 days or less prior to departure, a noshow, or early return from the trip will result in forfeiture of 100% of the published full regular tariff. In addition, any applicable airline cancellation fees and administrative fees will be assessed.
Because these cancellation policies are strictly enforced, we strongly recommend for your protection that you purchase trip cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation insurance is available through Thomas P. Gohagan & Company for comprehensive coverage of such expenses in conjunction with cancellation due to illness or accident, as well as damaged or lost luggage. ARBITRATION AGREEMENT: Any controversy or claim arising out of or relating in any way to these Terms and Conditions, to the Responsibility Clause, to the brochure, or any other information relating in any way to the trip, or to the trip itself, shall be settled solely and exclusively by binding arbitration in Chicago, Illinois, in accordance with the commercial rules of the American Arbitration Association then existent.
