Steve Cushman, Robert C. Taylor Professor of English

U.Va. Faculty: Steve Cushman (Ireland ’06, East Africa ’07) is the Robert C. Taylor Professor of English at U.Va., where he has taught since 1982. With a B.A. from Cornell and a Ph.D. from Yale, he has brought to the English Department and the American Studies Major his commitment to American literature, modern Literature, poetry, literature and the environment, and the American Civil War. His teaching has been honored with an All-University Teaching Award and the first Mayo Distinguished Teaching Professorship. A poet as well as a scholar, he has published six books, most recently Bloody Promenade: Reflections on a Civil War Battle(Virginia, 1999) and Cussing Lesson, a volume of poems (LSU, 2002). His book of poems,HeartIsland, was published in Fall 2006. Steve helped create our 2007 journey entitled “Hemingway’s Africa: Sights and Safaris.”

Or instead of Angkor, explore the UNESCO World Heritage site, Ha Long Bay. Marvel at the spectacular seascape of towering limestone pillars and floating villages on a serene cruise in traditional boats. Swissôtel Lima: Located in Lima’s most exclusive residential and commercial district, San Isidro, the Swissôtel offers all the comforts that discriminating guests expect in their home away from home.  Le Café boasts a delicious Swiss buffet, Peruvian delicacies, exotic tea, and seasonal food festivals, while La Fondue offers spectacular Swiss cuisine and wines.  Other dining options include the Italian restaurant La Locanda, the Lobby Bar, and the Gourmet Deli.  The property also has an on-site spa including pool, Jacuzzi, sun salon, sauna, steam room, and massage. Monasterio Hotel, Cusco, Peru: Originally constructed over 300 years ago as the San Antonio Seminary, the Hotel Monasterio is a museum hotel providing all the comforts and quality of a deluxe property.  The guestrooms reflect their origins as the home for the Jesuit seminarians, decorated in a combination of modern and traditional Spanish colonial styles.  All rooms are equipped with telephone, mini bar, in-room safe, cable TV, and hairdryer.  Laundry service is available 24 hours a day.  A limited number of oxygen enriched rooms (to help minimize the effects of altitude) are available at a nominal additional cost.  Please let us know if you would like to reserve one of these rooms.

Hanga Roa Hotel, Iorana Hotel, or Taha Tai Hotel, Easter Island:

  • Hanga Roa Hotel: Located just a few minutes from the airport, each bungalow at the Hanga Roa Hotel has an ocean view.  The largest hotel on the island, it has a cozy bar, restaurant, small gift shop, and outdoor swimming pool.  Laundry service and room service are available.  Each guestroom features a color TV, small refrigerator, direct dial telephone, small patio, and private bath with hairdryer.  Rooms are open to ocean breezes and equipped with fans.
  • Iorana Hotel: This hotel has 52 comfortable rooms, all with views of different Rapa Nui landscapes including the Pacific Ocean, the volcanic stone that borders the coasts, the green hills and gardens, and the pools. From any point of the hotel you can delight in the beautiful sunsets that take place in this mysterious land. All rooms have a telephone, security box, fully equipped private bathroom, hairdryer, television, and mini bar.  Laundry service is available.
  • Taha Tai Hotel: This basic tranquil property is situated near the beach and is just a short walk from downtown.  The Taha Tai has 40 rooms and cottages, with mini bar, color TV, in-room safe, and hairdryer. Rooms do not have ocean views.  There is also a bar, swimming pool, and a spacious restaurant.  Laundry service is available.

Aggie Grey’s Lagoon Beach Resort & Spa, Samoa: This resort was built in 2005 and is nestled among 224 acres of tropical gardens along a stretch of white sand beach with its own blue turquoise lagoon.  In keeping with Aggie Grey’s legacy, it is a warm, relaxed, and friendly place where strangers quickly become friends.  Enjoy the extensive spa, fitness area, tennis courts, outstanding food at the Fale (Beach) Restaurant, and a staff whose hospitality is characteristic of the island. Invading, liberating, or civil armies have found billet here and raised their flags, it was the site of the first film shown in Indochina, where Charlie Chaplin spent his honeymoon, where Jane Fonda and Joan Baez took cover in a bomb shelter, and where heads of state and embassy officials resided for many years. Hotel amenities include two restaurants serving French and Vietnamese cuisine, three bars, an outdoor pool, fitness center with sauna and massage, and business center. Rooms feature hardwood floors, cane furniture, high ceilings and modern bathrooms with hairdryers and toiletries in hand-painted ceramic jars. Rambagh Palace, Jaipur, India: This architectural masterpiece presents a fine blend of Rajput and Moghul architecture and spreads over 47 acres of tranquil, landscaped gardens. It was built in 1835 as a hunting lodge, converted into the palace of the Maharaja of Jaipur in 1925, and then transformed into India’s first palace hotel in 1957. It has been carefully restored and each refurbished room overlooks courtyards with burbling fountains or verdant gardens. Enjoy 24-hour in-room dining, same day laundry and dry cleaning service, beauty salon, shopping arcade, fitness center, pool, cocktail bar, restaurant, and resident astrologer. Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra, India: Just minutes from the Taj Mahal, this world-class, luxurious hotel has been designed to offer views of the Taj Mahal from every guest room. In each room, guests will appreciate a butler service, hairdryer, CD/DVD player, satellite television, computer data port, coffee/tea-making facilities, in-room safe, and mini bar. Dining options at the Amarvilas include The Bellevue, an all-day restaurant; Esphahan, serving specialty Indian cuisine; the pool snack bar; and 24-hour room service. Mobile Tented Camps, Tanzania: The mobile camp is erected on an exclusive basis for our group, in the prime vantage point for wildlife at the time of our visit. The camp tents are authentic and exceptionally comfortable, with twin beds, Persian rugs, small veranda, and en suite bathroom with sink/vanity area, hot-water bucket showers, and private en suite wooden ‘bush’ toilet. Tents are illuminated by gentle solar light and paraffin lamps. Camp cuisine is exceptional, using only fresh ingredients, original recipes and with beautiful presentation, served either al fresco or in the dining tent. The camp also has a lounge tent with maps and reference books and a well-stocked bar.

Sonesta St. George Hotel, Luxor, Egypt: This modern, seven-story building overlooks the Nile River. Sip your favorite drink by the pool, or enjoy a light meal at Jeb’s poolside restaurant. General Terms & Conditions

Around the World by Private Jet Terms and Conditions and Operator-Participant Contract

The University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program is a sponsoring organization for this expedition and has selected Starquest Expeditions Corp., 1000 Second Avenue, Suite 1400, Seattle, WA 98104, a qualified professional tour operator, to organize and administer the Around the World by Private Jet expedition. Starquest Expeditions, as the principal, is responsible to you for arranging and providing all of the services and accommodations offered in connection with the tour, provided, however, that in the absence of gross negligence on our part, we are not responsible for personal injury or property damage caused by the air carrier, hotel, or other suppliers of any of the services being offered in connection with this expedition. The passenger tickets in use by the carriers shall constitute the sole contract between the carriers and the passenger; the carriers are not responsible for any act, omission, or event during the time expedition participants are not aboard their conveyance. The University of Virginia Cavalier Travels Program and Starquest Expeditions shall not be held liable for (A) any damage to, or loss of, property or injury to, or death of, persons occasioned directly or indirectly by an act or omission of any other provider, including but not limited to any defect in any aircraft, watercraft, or vehicle operated or provided by such other provider, and (B) any loss or damage due to delay, cancellation, or disruption in any manner caused by the laws, regulations, acts or failures to act, demands, orders, or interpositions of any government or any subdivision or agent thereof, or by acts of God, strikes, fire, flood, war, rebellion, terrorism, insurrection, sickness, quarantine, epidemics, theft, or any other cause(s) beyond their control. The participant waives any claim against the University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program and Starquest Expeditions for any such loss, damage, injury, or death. By registering for this expedition, the participant certifies that he/she does not have any mental, physical, or other condition or disability that would create a hazard for him/ herself or other participants. The University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program and Starquest Expeditions reserve the right at their sole discretion to accept, decline to accept, or remove any participant on this expedition and reserves the right, subject to the terms of this Contract, to withdraw any part or all of the trip and to make such changes as may be necessary. The University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program and Starquest Expeditions shall not be liable for any air carrier’s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket to or from the participant’s departure city.

Reservations & Payment: To reserve your place on Around the World Expedition by Private Jet, complete the Reservation Form and return it with your deposit. Make checks payable to “Starquest Expeditions Corp. Escrow Account” and write “ATW1-10” in the memo line. Or charge your deposit to Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. If you pay your initial deposit by credit card, it is fully refundable until you sign the attached Reservation Form. Mail to the University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program, P.O. Box 400807, Charlottesville, VA 22904. A deposit of $2,500 per passenger is required to secure reservations. A second payment of $15,000 per passenger is due July 6, 2009. Final payment is due November 5, 2009. The second and final payments are payable by check or wire transfer only, made out to Starquest Expeditions’ secure escrow account. If the expedition is fully booked when your reservation is received, your payment will be returned within 7 days, or with your authorization, we can retain the deposit and place your name on a waiting list in the event other passengers cancel their reservations. Even if you authorize us to put your name on a waiting list and retain your deposit, we will notify you within 7 days that the expedition is fully booked.

Security Agreement: Your payments are held in an escrow account at the Commerce Bank of Washington, 601 Union Street, Suite 3600, Seattle, WA, 98101-1342. Participants are protected by a Letter of Credit #592 issued by the Commerce Bank of Washington. Any claims against this letter of credit must be filed with Starquest or the Commerce Bank within 60 days of the termination of the expedition. After that time, Starquest Expeditions and Commerce Bank will be released from liability under the security agreement.

Expedition Price: The expedition price of $54,950 per person (double occupancy) with a $7,950 single supplement includes a privately chartered Boeing 757 that departs from Washington, D.C., U.S.A., and returns to London, England. The Around the World expedition dates are February 5 to 26, 2010. Included are deluxe or best available accommodations and all applicable taxes in the destinations and options as indicated in the flyer from arrival at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C., on February 5, 2010, through departure from Sofitel Marrakech Imperial Hotel & Spa, Morocco, on February 26, 2010. All meals beginning with dinner on February 5, 2010, and ending with lunch aboard the jet on February 26, 2010, are included. All taxes; group transportation; excursions; complete program of special events and activities; extensive program of customized options at most destinations; enrichment program including lectures by a team of experts; services of professional staff, including an expedition physician, to assist you throughout the trip; cost of philanthropic activities; amenities package; the cost of shipping expedition luggage and amenities to households within the United States; $100,000 medical evacuation insurance for covered reasons; bottled water throughout the program (during sightseeing, at scheduled meals, and in your room); all beverages, including liquor, aboard the private jet; liquor during special events and cocktail parties on land; house wine and/or beer at lunch and dinner, and coffee, tea, milk, and soft drinks at all scheduled meals on land; baggage handling during the expedition; and tips or gratuities to local guides, drivers, porters, and waitstaff are included. Any tips or gratuities not specifically mentioned as included in the total expedition price will be at your discretion. Not included in the price are commercial airfare from your home city to Washington, D.C., and from London, England, to your home city; the cost of shipping expedition luggage and amenities to international households; individual airport transfers at beginning and end of trip; optional and additional accident/baggage/cancellation insurance; passport and visa fees; personal expenses such as laundry, telephone, fax, and Internet charges; all beverages not mentioned above as included; hotel mini-bar charges; meals not scheduled by Starquest; and inoculation and medication costs of any kind. Except for “major changes” as described below, no refund will be made for any accommodations or services included in the expedition price that you voluntarily do not use.

Insurance: Trip cancellation, health, and accident insurance are available for purchase; we will send you more information upon registration. We strongly recommend these important protections, which can save you money if you are forced to cancel or alter your trip. Insurance premium payments are subject to the policies of the insurance carrier and are generally not refundable.

Baggage: On the private jet, each passenger is limited to 100 pounds of baggage in 2 bags each weighing 50 pounds or less. For INTERNATIONAL flights, the air carrier’s liability is limited to the actual value of the baggage but not more than 1,000 Special Drawing Rights, approximately $1,250 per passenger, unless a higher value is declared at the time of check-in and an appropriate excess valuation charge is paid. Baggage and personal effects are at all times the sole responsibility of the participant.

Aircraft: This flight will be performed using a Boeing 757 jet with 76 VIP-class seats operated by Thomson Airways, formerly First Choice Airways, First Choice House, London Road, Crawley, West Sussex, RH10 9GX England. The operator and air carrier reserve the right to substitute equivalent aircraft if necessary.

Cancellations and Refunds: If you cancel your reservation, your right to receive a refund is limited, as set forth in the following schedule. All requests for refunds must be sent to us in writing via mail, fax, or e-mail.

Refunds will be made within 14 days of receipt of your notice of cancellation.

If you cancel and provide a substitute participant for this trip, you will receive a full refund of money paid toward the price less an administrative charge of $25 for effecting the substitution once the substitute participant has paid in full. Please note that the costs for visas, commercial air tickets, insurance, and pre- or post-tour independent arrangements may not be refundable. If we make major changes prior to departure, you have the right to cancel and receive a full refund. The following are major changes: (1) a change in the departure or return date, unless the change results from a flight delay experienced by the air carrier (If, however, the delay is longer than 48 hours, it will be considered a major change.); (2) a change in the origin or destination city for any flight leg, unless the change affects only the order in which cities named in a tour package are visited; (3) a substitute of any hotel of lower standard; (4) a price increase of more than 10 percent occurring 10 or more days before departure. In no event can we increase your price less than 10 days before departure. If a major change must be made in the program, we will notify you within 7 days after first learning of the change, but in any event at least 10 days prior to the scheduled departure. If, less than 10 days before scheduled departure, we become aware that a major change must be made, we will notify you as soon as possible. Within 7 days after receiving notification of a major change, but in no event later than departure, you may cancel your reservation and you will receive a full refund within 14 days after canceling. If a major change occurs after the departure of the flight, which you are unwilling to accept, we will refund, within 14 days after your scheduled return date, that portion of your payment, which applies to the services not accepted. If we must cancel the expedition, we will notify you in writing within 7 days of the cancellation, but in no event later than 10 days before the scheduled departure date. We have no right to cancel the tour less than 10 days before departure, except for circumstances that make it physically impossible to perform the tour. If that occurs, we will notify you as soon as possible, but not later than the scheduled departure date. If the expedition is canceled, we will make a full refund to you within 14 days after cancellation. The rights and remedies made available under this contract are in addition to any other rights or remedies available under applicable law. However, we offer refunds under this contract with the express understanding that the receipt of that refund by a passenger waives the additional remedies.

Itinerary Changes: The itineraries and staff are subject to modification and change by the University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program and Starquest Expeditions. Every reasonable effort will be made to operate the program as planned; however, should unforeseen world events and conditions require our itinerary to be altered, we reserve the right to do so for the safety and best interest of the group.

International Flights: The operation of these flights is subject to the foreign governments involved granting landing rights for the flight. If the air carrier cannot obtain these rights for any particular flight leg of the expedition, that flight leg will be canceled and alternative arrangements may be made, at the discretion of the University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program and Starquest Expeditions.

Health Requirements: This is an active program, which requires you to make a realistic assessment of your health. Prior to traveling, we recommend that you visit your personal physician for a check-up, so that you may discuss your ability to participate in this type of journey as described in the trip brochure. All participants are expected to be in active good health, to enjoy traveling as part of a group, and to be ready to experience cultural differences with grace. Walking and climbing stairs are required in many hotels and airports, to board the aircraft, and are part of many excursions. Please note: To go to certain destinations or participate in certain activities, such as visiting a high-altitude area (7,500 feet above sea level and higher), you will need to obtain your physician’s approval. A form will be sent to you for your physician to sign. An alternate destination or activity can be arranged, if your physician recommends it. Any physical condition requiring special attention, diet, or treatment should be reported in writing when the reservation is made. If you require a slower pace, extra assistance, or the use of a cane or walking stick, arrangements will be made for private touring at each destination, if necessary, at the discretion of our tour staff. Any extra cost for such arrangements will be the responsibility of the traveler. If you would like to forego some of the scheduled sightseeing to rejuvenate and relax, please feel free to do so at any time. Malaria and other diseases are present in some of the countries featured in this itinerary; proof of yellow fever inoculation is required. For the latest recommendations on specific health precautions for the areas you will visit, consult your physician and the Centers for Disease Control.

Single/Shared Accommodations & Suite Upgrades: A limited number of single rooms are available at extra cost on a first-come, first-served basis. We will assist persons requesting a roommate. Participants will be notified if a suitable roommate is not available. In this case, the single rate will be charged. Suite rooms are available in some destinations; more information about them, including their extra costs, will be sent to you approximately 4 months before departure.

Basis of Rates: All prices are based on two persons sharing a room. All prices and fares are quoted in U.S. dollars. The rates are based on current tariffs and are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While we will do everything possible to maintain the listed prices, if it is necessary to levy a surcharge, we reserve the right to do so and will notify you at the time of final invoicing. The University of Virginia, Cavalier Travels Program and Starquest Expeditions reserve the right to cancel any trip because of inadequate enrollment that makes the trip economically infeasible to operate. In such a case, a full refund of the expedition cost will be made.

By registering for the Around the World by Private Jet expedition, the participant agrees to the Operator-Participant Contract, Responsibility Statement, and Terms and Conditions herein.
