Road Closures and Construction Around Grounds

Please review the following ongoing construction and road improvement projects that will impact your visit to Grounds.

Emmet Street Traffic Flow

Initial work to support a utility project will impact traffic on Emmet Street near Alumni Hall. While Emmet Street is open for through traffic, traffic management (cones, traffic guards, etc.) will be in place. Please use caution coming and going from Alumni Hall!

McCormick/Alderman Road Closure

Two projects (related to utilities and sidewalk expansion) will close sections of McCormick Road and Alderman Road during the summer of 2023.

This road closure will most directly impact alumni who are staying on-Grounds (in dorms or on the Lawn or Range) and will need to pick up their keys at Gibbons House on Alderman Road. Review the maps below and visit the project website to learn more about road closures and detour routes.

Detail showing the closures on McCormick and Alderman Roads. Left turn only from eastbound McCormick onto northbound Alderman.
The detour to avoid the McCormick/Alderman Road Closure is highlighted in yellow.

Parking

Accessible Parking

If you have a valid disabled permit or license plate displayed, you may park in an accessible parking space anywhere on Grounds. Click here to view an Accessibility Map of Grounds.

Free Parking

For your convenience, free parking is available at the following locations during Reunions.

All other parking garages, spots and lots on Grounds and in Charlottesville are subject to enforcement by citation or towing based on posted signage.

Paid Parking

Paid parking will be available at the Central Grounds Garage (Zone 5515) via the ParkMobile app only. The University no longer utilizes parking attendants or kiosks to take payment. Please familiarize yourself with the app before coming back to Grounds if you plan to park in the Central Grounds Garage.

Transportation

The most direct way to access Reunions events is by foot, due to lack of parking immediately surrounding the Lawn. However, if you have a valid disabled permit or license plate displayed, you may park in an accessible parking space anywhere on Grounds — including spots along McCormick Road near the Lawn. Click here to view an Accessibility Map of Grounds.

Accessibility Shuttle

Available June 2 and 3 only. A complimentary accessibility shuttle will be available for alumni and guests to access the events of Reunions (often taking place on Central Grounds, where parking is limited). The van will have a sign in the front window that says “UVA Reunions Accessibility Shuttle” and will complete the loop every 20–25 minutes (traffic permitting) at the following times on the below route, allowing alumni to hop on and off as needed.

Shuttle hours:

  • Friday, June 2: 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 3: 8 a.m.-7 p.m.

Shuttle loop:

*The driver will wait for 5 minutes at each stop.

  • Alumni Hall (pick up from the back doors of Alumni Hall, near Lewis Mountain Road)

  • Culbreth Theatre Garage
  • Alumni Hall

Additionally, on Saturday night, starting at 3:30 p.m., the shuttle will service Carr’s Hill (after stopping at the University Chapel) through 7 p.m. to allow access to the President’s Reception.

You can ride any UTS bus for free by showing your Reunions nametag. Click here for schedule and route information.
