How Things Work with Lou Bloomfield

May 21, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join Lou Bloomfield, Professor in the Department of Physics, for a look at the science behind three everyday objects: roller coasters, microwave ovens, and rubber. Based on his experience teaching physics in everyday contexts to over 11,000 UVA undergrads, Bloomfield will show you why you’re pressed into your seat on a loop-the-loop, why metals spark or overheat in a microwave, and why rubber bounces. He’ll also introduce his invention: a shape-memory rubber, related to Silly Putty, that is poised to revolutionize earplugs, shoe insoles, and many other things.

RSVP HERE. This event will be free for members and $15.00 for non-members. Join us 6:30pm for a complimentary cocktail reception!
