Startup Legal Basics for Entrepreneurs

November 19, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Hoos Entrepreneurs presents Startup Legal Basics, an informative session covering legal need-to-know for founders. If you’ve recently started a company or are thinking about doing so, now or in the future, but are intimidated by the legal aspects, this is the event for you! Led by startup lawyers in the Hoo community, the panel will also include entrepreneurs sharing stories “from the trenches” to turn abstract ideas into concrete considerations.

The event will be moderated by Allison Geller (CLAS ’12). Panelists include:

  • Rich Boone (LAW ’01), Partner at Wilson Elser
  • George Akers (LAW ’15, DAR ’15), Associate Attorney at Nelson Mullins
  • Alex Shin (CLAS ’00), Attorney at Nelson Mullins

Topics we’ll cover will include:

Corporate structure: Sole proprietor? LLC? Corporation? Learn about the benefits and drawbacks of each to help decide which structure is right for your business.

Taxes and liability: High-level considerations for everyone’s favorite topic—taxes!

Protecting intellectual property: When and why it matters—and what mistakes not to make early on.

Cofounder relationships: Pitfalls of partnership and how to avoid a messy breakup.

Fundraising fundamentals: Legal basics for raising early capital.

There will also be a chance to ask questions and engage in open conversation with the experts. Also a great opportunity for those entrepreneurs who want to brush up or do it better next time!

About Hoos in Entrepreneurship: Dedicated to solving business problems, pooling expertise, sharing ideas, and connecting people, Hoos in Entrepreneurship is aimed at providing both practical help and moral support to UVA alumni entrepreneurs. If you run your own business or are working on starting one, this is the group for you. We are hoping to grow this group into a formal Community of Interest for the Virginia Club of New York. All Wahoos working in or interested in entrepreneurship are encouraged to attend! If you are unable to attend but are interested in getting involved with this community, please email the Club’s Executive Director at uvanyc@uvanyc.org.

You will receive an email with the Zoom link on the day prior to the event. We ask that participants register by 12:00 p.m. the day of the event.
