Joanne Freeman on “The Field of Blood”

November 29, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join UVA and Yale alumni for a lecture presented by Joanne B. Freeman (GSAS ’94, ’98), a professor of History and American Studies at Yale University and a leading authority on early national politics and political culture. Following a half hour reception, Joanne will present her recent book, “The Field of Blood”, which recovers the long-lost story of physical violence on the floor of the U.S. Congress. Her dramatic accounts of brawls and thrashings tell a larger story of how fisticuffs and journalism, and the powerful emotions they elicited, raised tensions between North and South that led toward war. The result is a fresh understanding of the workings of American democracy and the bonds of the Union on the eve of their greatest peril.

Please note that this event is limited to members-only. Members may reserve a maximum of two tickets at the member rate. Please RSVP in advance.
