Hoos in Entrepreneurship – How to Ask for Help
November 13, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Join your fellow Wahoo entrepreneurs, both seasoned and aspiring, for an informal virtual coffee chat. We’ll touch base about our businesses, challenges we’re going through, and questions we’d like to pose to the group, and then have a moderated discussion on something we often do, but rarely talk about: ask for help.
The popular image of the entrepreneur who “goes it alone” until they ultimately find success is never really accurate. Every successful entrepreneur has had help, be it from mentors, colleagues, friends, investors, advisors, family members, or that first client or customer willing to take a chance on an enthusiastic hopeful. And yet asking for help often feels downright uncomfortable. In her 2018 book Reinforcements, social psychologist Dr. Heidi Grant writes, “[O]ur reluctance to ask for help means we often don’t get the support or the resources we need. Making matters worse, our intuitions about what should make others more likely to help are often dead wrong.”
We’ll look at learnings from psychology, as well as our own experiences and those of others, to create a better framework for asking for what we need.
Please take a moment to think about your own experiences asking for help in your business and career, what you learned from them, and the stories of other entrepreneurs who have inspired you.
About Hoos in Entrepreneurship: Dedicated to solving business problems, pooling expertise, sharing ideas, and connecting people, Hoos in Entrepreneurship is aimed at providing both practical help and moral support to UVA alumni entrepreneurs. If you run your own business or are working on starting one, this is the group for you. We are hoping to grow this group into a formal Community of Interest for the Virginia Club of New York. All Wahoos working in or interested in entrepreneurship are encouraged to attend! If you are unable to attend but are interested in getting involved with this community, please email the Club’s Executive Director at uvanyc@uvanyc.org.
You will receive an email with the Zoom link on the day prior to the event. We ask that participants register by 12:00 p.m. on November 12.
