March 19, 2017 is the 100th anniversary of famed UVA aviator James McConnell’s death in combat. I’ve asked a friend who’s living in Paris to lay flowers on that date at McConnell’s bier in the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial. Is there anyone else who would like to participate? If so, please contact me for particulars. The…more >

A recent letter signed by nearly 500 faculty and students at the University of Virginia calling on President Teresa A. Sullivan to refrain from quoting Thomas Jefferson has received considerable attention in recent days. President Sullivan’s response to the letter recognizes the important contributions of Mr. Jefferson to the founding of our democracy…more >

Dear Ms Sullivan et al, I am a 1974 alumnus of the College and have closely followed the post-election turmoil on the Grounds, as have thousands of University alumni/ae along with millions on TV. I would like to address the two major issues we confront – student protest and anti-Jefferson sentiment. On the former,...more >

Accusations of Coital Rapes at Fraternities since the Rolling Stone Article

Submitted on Apr 25, 2016 by Frank Forman (Col ’66, Grad ’68)

Have there been any? I spoke on the matter on March 4 last year, suggesting that the leaders of fraternities throughout the United States (and likely throughout the rest of the Anglosphere and Europe) would have within days, if not hours, after the Rolling Stone article came out, laid down the law and ordered that…more >

Trying to find an old hangout

Submitted on Feb 29, 2016 by Mark G. Pond (Com ’72)

I used to spend time in the Cave, somewhere in the basement more or less of Cabell Hall. It’s been decades since I have visited the Grounds. With luck I will be there this spring and would like to see if the Cave is still there and if so grab a cup of coffee. First,…more >

Rolling Stone editors

Submitted on Apr 7, 2015 by Michael Grow (Com ’66)

Rolling Stone not firing editors responsible for rape article? Can’t we begin a grass roots groundswell of indignation demanding they be fired for gross incompetence and lack of professionalism for damaging so many reputations and setting back the cause of women’s safety on campuses? C’mon man!

  1. Our own University president violated the law following the Rolling Stone outrage on said:
By shutting down the fraternity system and imposing additional restrictions without any finding of guilt by a court of law, she violated the students First and Fourteenth Amendment Rights. She is a disaster. We need a president with legal training to stop making decisions that seem well intentioned but pander to the cause...more >

How about truth in advertising?

Submitted on Apr 7, 2015 by Bart Snell (Com ’74)

I just received another information email from the University President, or the PR firm using that address. A new term was invented, “Affordable Excellence.” A few important facts were excluded from the rather distorted email that now is delivered under the email address of the University President. Is she being held hostage?
