All alumni, parents, students and friends of UVA are invited to join us for our March Happy Hour featuring guest speaker Dean of Students Allen Groves. Dean Groves will address his office’s program which requires all incoming First Year students to participate in an “implicit bias module”. Implicit bias is a term that refers to attitudes or prejudices individuals possess which unconsciously impact their actions, decisions and understanding. It affects how individuals view others based on race, ethnicity, gender and other factors.
The University began teaching all incoming first-year students about implicit bias in August 2012 and moved forward with the module program and discussions with a pilot program in 2017. The program is now required for all incoming students. The goal of the module is not to “score” a student on their bias, but rather to open lines of discussion and thought that may not have naturally opened as directly or quickly.
Please join us for a stimulating conversation on a major step taken by the University, with Dean Grove’s leadership, to address all student’s incoming perceptions and their self-awareness.
This Happy Hour will take place at Sloney’s Pub at UVA Inn at Darden, 10 Duffy Blvd., Charlottesville, VA 22903. Parking is available on the Darden ‘horseshoe boulevard’ or in the Darden parking garage. Please RSVP for an accurate count!
