Come join us for a Friday lunch and discussion on telehealth and its role in the American healthcare system.  A panel of experts in the field will provide the work that is being carried out to help modernize our healthcare sector.  This will be a time to learn more about this aspect of healthcare and also network with fellow alumni in the field.

Panelists:

Dr. Karen Rhueban is the Medical Director for UVa’s Office of Telemedicine and a pediatric cardiologist.  She is also the  leads the Mid-Atlantic Telehealth Resource Center, which facilitates efforts by stakeholders to expand adoption of telehealth in NC, VA, DC, MD, KY, WV, DE and PA.  She is one of the leading policy proponents for telehealth in Virginia and the U.S.  Last year, the American Telemedicine Association acknowledged her contributions by awarding her its annual President’s Award for the Advancement of Telemedicine Individual Award.

Joining Dr. Rheuban will be David Gerdt PhD, a bioengineer with an MS and PhD from UVa and CEO of Empirical Technologies Corporation in Charlottesville.  Dr. Gerdt will bring a bioengineering perspective by describing various technological innovations in sensor-based monitoring devices, and some of the challenges of translating scientific innovations to viable products and sustainable businesses.

The third panelist will be Kirby Farrell, a telecommunications entrepreneur in Charlottesville, who is working with the University and its medical center to stand up a scalable business for helping hospitals and other care providers reduce hospital readmissions with remote monitoring solutions.
