Being an effective member of a non-profit or professional board can serve not only as a career networking opportunity but as a way to help your community.

Suzanne Israel Tufts (Law ’82) shares her best practices for board membership. Topics will include:

  • Joining a Board:  how to position yourself, how to interview, what is expected in terms of background and skill set
  • Serving on a Board:  how to be an effective board member, including the latest thinking regarding Board conduct and responsibilities, etc.

Suzanne has been privileged to work with and learn from experts in the field including Fortune 500 Board recruiters, CEOs, Venture Capitalists and angel investors.

About Suzanne Israel Tufts

Suzanne Israel Tufts (Law ’82) is an executive, consultant and attorney who has worked with the boards of directors and advisory councils of over one hundred not for profit organizations.

Suzanne received her Bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, where she was President of the Class of 1977.  She came to the University of Virginia for Law School, where she was selected to be a Dillard Fellow, and earned her law degree in 1982.

Suzanne has worked with numerous entrepreneurial and emerging companies and has reported to federal sub-Cabinet agency heads and Congressional oversight committees. She served as a White House appointee and as the President and CEO of AWED, the American Woman’s Economic Development Corporation, the nation’s first adult education center specializing in the training of women entrepreneurs. Suzanne has practiced corporate commercial and white collar litigation and in addition, Suzanne has had her own consulting practice focusing on assisting the not-for-profit, philanthropic and emerging business communities with everything from strategic planning to board governance to community outreach.

Among her numerous board positions and volunteer activities, Suzanne has served on the:

  • National Selection Committee for the UVA’s Jefferson Scholars Law Fellows
  • UVA Law School’s Annual Campaign Committee
  • IRS Exempt Organizations Advisory Council for Region II
  • National Civil Rights Committee of the Anti-Defamation League
  • Advisory Board for Columbia Business School’s Executive Education program in Non-Profit Management
