October 5, 6 and 7, 2017 meeting
We hope you have marked your calendar to attend the Emeritus Society events on October 5, 6 and 7, where you will be a part of the University’s Bicentennial Kickoff Celebration. Also, you will have the opportunity to reminiscence with your former classmates and/or former Board of Managers members and meet and greet the new Board members. The Emeritus Society meeting is in conjunction with the Board of Managers meeting.
Please make time during your visit to meet and greet Jenifer Andrasko, the new President and CEO of the Alumni Association. Jen assumed her duties on July 1, and has an open door policy; however, if you are making a special trip by Alumni Hall to visit her, you might want to call to make sure she is in her office that day. On Thursday evening, October 5, the emeriti will join the Board of Managers for cocktails and dinner at The Local, a restaurant in the Belmont section of Charlottesville, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Transportation will be provided from Alumni Hall, as parking at the restaurant is somewhat limited. You should plan to be at the back entrance to Alumni Hall at 6:00 p.m. for boarding.
On Friday, October 6th, we will begin our day with breakfast from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m., at Alumni Hall, after which we will board the private motor coach for a morning at Montpelier. Upon arrival, we will see a short film in the theatre, have a mansion tour, walk the grounds, and visit the gravesites and gardens. We will depart Montpelier at 12:10 p.m. for lunch at the renowned Pomme Restaurant in Gordonsville. We will depart Pomme at 2:00 p.m. for a return trip to Alumni Hall, arriving back at approximately 2:45 p.m., in time for you to get to the Lawn area for the events there. Unfortunately, we will not have time to visit a winery, in order to join the festivities on the Lawn.
If you do not wish to take the above excursion, you may wish to attend the Board of Managers committee meetings and have lunch with the Board members on Friday. Lunch will be at 12:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
On Friday, October 6th, at 3:00 p.m., there will be a Tribute to the Laying of the Cornerstone, on the Lawn, near Pavilion VII. From 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. that day, Brendan Wolfe, author of Mr. Jefferson’s Telescope, will present A History of the University of Virginia in One Hundred Objects, which will be held in the Special Collections Auditorium. Both of these events are free and open to the public.
On Friday, October 6th, there will be a reception in the Manning Pavilion at Alumni Hall from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with heavy hors d’oeuvres at which you can come and go as your schedule permits.
Also, on Friday, October 6th, at 7:00 p. m., the Bicentennial Launch Celebration will take place on The Lawn. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are required for this event. We will provide the tickets, and there will be a space on the reservation form to insert the number of tickets you need. Dinner on Friday evening is on your own. For those who do not wish to walk from Alumni Hall, or elsewhere, to the Lawn for the Bicentennial Kickoff Celebration, the Bicentennial Committee will be providing shuttle buses from John Paul Jones (JPJ) Arena to the Chapel area, on a continuous loop, throughout the evening. There will be surface parking, as well as garage parking, at JPJ. Unfortunately, the Alumni Association will not provide transportation to and from the Lawn area.
On Saturday, October 7th, you and a guest are invited to attend More than the Score here at Alumni Hall at 10:00 a.m. The speaker will be Alan Taylor, Thomas Jefferson Foundation Chair, who will provide a bicentennial-themed lecture. Seating is limited and registration is required. Please indicate on the reservation form if you would like to attend this event. Joyce Shiflett will be happy to register you. Also, on Saturday, October 7, you and a guest are invited to a tailgate here at Alumni Hall, which could be either breakfast or lunch, but, in any event, held three hours prior to football kickoff. From here it is on to Scott Stadium for the Virginia v. Duke football game. Due to the limited number of football tickets we are allotted by the Athletic Department, we must limit the number of tickets to two to each former Board member, but we may be able to purchase additional tickets for you, should you need them. Please indicate on the reservation form the number of tickets you will need for the tailgate, as well as the football game, which you may pick up on either Friday or Saturday, October 6 or 7, whichever is more convenient to you.
As you know, kickoff time for the football game may not be announced until a week before the game which makes planning a little difficult for you, as well as us. We will do our best to keep you abreast of any information which we receive.
We have a limited number of rooms blocked at Boar’s Head Inn, Cavalier Inn and Courtyard by Marriott, University Area, for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 5, 6 and 7. We must release our block of rooms at the Boar’s Head Inn and Courtyard Marriott on August 18, and Cavalier Inn on September 1. Please let Joyce Shiflett know, as soon as possible, if you will need hotel accommodations, if you have not returned to her your reservation from. We will do our best to accommodate any requests that you have.
