All alumni, parents and friends are invited to join us for a Flash Seminar entitled “Does Facebook “Like” Democracy?” with Siva Vaidhyanathan, UVA Robertson Professor of Modern Media Studies, College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and teacher at the UVA Law School.
In 2016, we saw three major upsets in electoral politics that raise the specter that social media is anything but social. Both the election of President Donald Trump and the “Brexit” vote seemed to rely on campaigns identifying and motivating potential supporters through Facebook advertisements, the use of personal data scraped from Facebook, and the willingness of supporters to spread information and disinformation through Facebook posts. The third upset was even more revealing. In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte relied on a team of paid supporters to spread propaganda through Facebook, thus routing around the filtering and certification role that traditional organs of journalism try to perform. How responsible is Facebook for these turns of events? What can and should journalists do in the face of this phenomenon? And what are the prospects for responsible citizenship in a world increasingly shaped by Facebook?
We hope you’ll join us for this enlightening discussion!
